September 25, 2021 - Ocean City Flyover

Georgeous fall day today.  Perfect flying weather:  crystal clear blue sky, cool temperatures, light winds, smooth air.

I was meeting some other Essex Skypark RV drivers today at Ocean City Airport.  We were going to do a flyover for a local aviator Tom Zink of Martin State Airport who had flown west recently.

Here, I'm passing overhead Easton Airport, which has a control tower, so I had to be over 2,600 feet.  They had their Easton Airport day so there are lots of planes down there.

Passing by McGinnis private airport community.  I know a couple of people who have lots down there.

Passing by Laurel Airport, a grass strip that used to have a large skydiving operation.  Skydive Delmarva used to fly a Twin Otter that could carry 20 jumpers aloft at a time.  I did my one and only parachute jump here.  Link.  But they are no longer in operation here.

I passed by this private grass strip about five miles east of Ocean City that I had never noticed before.

Approaching Ocean City.

Checking out Ocean Downs Casino and harness racing track.

Looking at Ocean City with the Ocean City Municipal airport in the foreground.

Parachuting was in progress.  I didn't want to fly under the jumpers so I landed on runway 2 even though it had a slight crosswind.

We ended up with five RVs and a Decathelon.  Brian's Decathelon is in the foreground.  From left to right:  Chuck's RV-7A, my RV-7, Mark's RV-8, Brian's RV-8 flown by Chip, JJ's RV-8 flown by his son Chris.

Brian recently had his Decathelon recovered; it looks great.

Mounting up; getting ready to go!

Just after takeoff on 14.  What a beautiful day and a beautiful place to go flying.

Looking south down Assateaque Island.

Looking north at Ocean City.

We flew in a loose V formation with Mark in the lead (since he was the only one who doesn't have smoke -- yet).

The next few pictures are taken by Michelle from the back of Chip's RV-8.  From left to right:  Chris in the Redline RV-8, moi, and Mark.

Now we're in pretty good formation.

Getting ready to go smoke on.

Smoke on!  The two RVs on each side were blowing smoke.

Smoke off.

Uh oh.  A twin went down in that miniture golf course!

You can still see remnants of the smoke.

Mark on Chip's tail.  Looks like he got a few hits!

Getting ready to bounce Chip and Mark.

Looking north up Isle of Wight and Assawomen Bays as I leave the others and head west.

Looking south down Highway 13 and Salisbury.

Passing by Bennett Airport, a public grass strip.  It has been a long time since I've landed here.

Approaching the estate and horse farm of my good friend Bones.  That's the Wicomico River running left to right.

A good look at Bone's place.

From another angle.

Bone's house is just off the Wicomico River so of course I had to fly it out to the Chesapeake Bay.

Approaching the Chesapeake Bay.

I make a right hand turn and enter the Nanticoke River, heading north.

I make a left turn off the Nanticoke into Marshyhope Creek.

Now on the Tuckahoe Creek.

I'm being shadowed!

Yanking and banking.

The plane knows its way home now.  That's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge shimmering in the distance, looking south.  Great aviation day.
